In-person Programs

Saturday, September 27

Family “Fun”-gi Hike

Take a leisurely hike through the trails of White Deer Park to look for mushrooms!
Come a little early to learn how to use iNaturalist and ecoEXPLORE. Bring your phones or cameras to take pictures! The hike starts promptly at 10am.
Ages 5 and up. No strollers allowed. Unaccompanied adults are welcome. Hikes are free, but pre-registration is required, and all family members present must be registered.

Homeschool/Track-out: The Fungus Among Us

Discover the amazing world of mushrooms and learn about these organisms that are neither plant nor animal. Learn how to identify some of the more common types of fungi in our area and discover the important role they play in our ecosystem. We will even go on a mushroom hunt! Parents/guardians are welcome to stay for the program or drop-off. Open to ages 6–13.

We’re celebrating Take a Child Outside Week with a walk to find mushrooms and other fungi! As we walk, be ready to photograph any mushrooms you find so that you can share your observations with scientists through your ecoEXPLORE account. This program will help you complete part of the ecoEXPLORE Mycology Badge.

Mushroom Walk

Mushroom Quest Hike

Join an aquarium educator and members of The Wilmington Mushroom Club for an easy hike in Carolina Beach State Park. You’ll learn what fungi are, why they’re important, what kinds are local, and how to report your mushroom observations to contribute to a worldwide body of community based scientific knowledge.

Mushroom Spore Painting

Mosey over to the Museum to learn about mushrooms. Participants will learn about identification, examine some prepared mushroom spore prints and then make their own mushrooms spore paintings. They will also search for mushrooms at the Museum. It is the perfect activity to celebrate Take A Child Outside Week. This is an ecoEXPLORE Skills Session geared towards ages 5–12, but anyone with an interest in the topic is welcome. ecoEXPLORErs will work towards their Mycology Badge and earn extra points. 

Mushroom Hunt

Explore the mysterious world of mushrooms by joining park staff on a hunt through the forest for fungi. Did you know we have fairy circles and glow-in-the-dark mushrooms in the park? Learn some of the common families of mushrooms in our area, and help document the species we have in the park by taking photos and collecting specimens to identify. This program is for ages 8 and up.  Program is full with a waiting list

NC Mushroom Quest – Mountains Region|

Come celebrate mushrooms across NC in this statewide mushroom count! This is the first fungi-filled bioblitz across the state where we will explore the arboretum to see what we can find this weekend! All ecoEXPLORERs will receive +5 bonus points for attending this skills session. Entry into the arboretum is free for all ecoEXPLORE participants, and we will meet you outside the Education Center to kick off this program!

Introduction to Mushrooms

This course is intended for a broad, adult audience as an introduction to mushrooms, including their identification, ecology and cultivation. Marc Cubeta, Ph.D., Professor of Entomology and Plant Pathology at NCSU and Rytas Vilgalys, Ph.D., Professor of Biology at Duke University will lead a classroom discussion on the basic taxonomy of fleshy fungi and a foray to a nearby forest.

Join staff from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville on a Mycology adventure! Mycology is the study of fungi, which includes mushrooms, mold, etc. Participants will learn the parts of a mushroom and go on a small hike in search of fungi. Registered ecoEXPLORErs will get five points for attending this program.
